Sutra – Free WordPress Theme

I’ve released my first free WordPress theme entitled Sutra.  It’s a very minimal theme meant for journal type posts with no distractions.

It was added to the WordPress theme directory yesterday.  I’m pretty excited to finally be able to give something back to the WP community.

Please download it and test it out for your next project, if you have any questions be sure to ask!

The very latest version can always be found here (just click the ZIP button with the cloud on it), once enough bug fixes and improvements are made I’ll push it up to the WordPress repository.

  1. When I began looking for themes for a new website project, “Sutra” jumped out at me immediately. The minimalism, cleanliness and font choice made it a very easy decision for me to choose it. Simplicity is beauty. And when I had an issue I could not solve, the author’s turnaround time and helpfulness were great.

    Thank you.

  2. Just wanted to say it’s a beautiful theme.

Also a suggestion, if you choose to refine it further. It would be great if some kind of horizontal drop down menu could be added. Sites with a lot of pages or sections are kind of limited by just one vertical menu.

But overall a wonderful theme, and kudos for offering it for free,

  3. Thanks very much John!

I do plan on updating this theme as time permits, the sidebar has been an issue with some people so I’m trying to figure out what to do about that, drop-down menus is a nice suggestion.

If you use the theme anywhere feel free to post a link to it here.

  4. Hi Mike,

We’ve been using Sutra for our company blog and it’s working great but we would like the first post to appear in full instead of an excerpt. Is this possible? And if so could you give us the code?

    • Hi Mei,

I’ve recently updated the theme so that it shows the full post automatically, you can update from your wp-admin Dashboard > Updates

Thanks very much for using the theme and feel free to leave a link to your site here so others can see how Sutra is being used.

  5. What a beautiful theme, Mike! It’s perfect for our needs and compliments our products wonderfully.

I do have a question – our marketing agency noticed that the page title runs together at the end, so there’s no space between the last letter of the first part and the first letter of the second part. Is there an easy fix for this? I know it’s a minor thing, but any help in SEO we can get, we’ll take! :-)

  6. I should probably provide a link, shouldn’t I? :-)

    Thanks again!

    • Hi Melani,

Thanks very much for leaving your link, it’s so interesting to see the wide variety of uses the Sutra theme is being put to.

I’ve just sent you an email that hopefully will fix the page title running together problem, thank you for bringing it to my attention. I’ll be adding this fix in the next update.

  7. Thinking of trying your beautifully simple theme on my website. Will have to mess around with the logo and the sidebar, but might worth a try!

I really like that theme. Thanks!

  8. I will likely use Sutra for this course website ( I love the look of the theme, but I’ve noticed that the menus are italicized on the front page, but not on the others. I prefer the non-italicized menu. Do you have any idea why this might be happening? Will I need to edit the theme?

    Thanks for your gorgeous work!

    • Hi Ryan,

Thanks very much for your kind words, I’m very happy to see Sutra being used in an academic environment.

Regarding your site – I notice that it is only on the Home page that the menu has turned italic, as well as the site name in the bottom right corner. This leads me to believe that there is an unclosed italic tag on the homepage, likely at the end of number 8.

In your Page edit window if you switch to ‘HTML’ mode instead of ‘Visual’ mode, using the tabs at the top right of the post edit window, then look at sentence number 8 you’ll see these tags around your sentences < em >Italic sentence here.< /em > (with no spaces!).

You’ll need to make sure you have that final closing tag after your last word – like this < /em > (again no spaces, I have to leave spaces here so it will show up.)

Alternatively, there may simply be some extra tags with no text inside them, deleting those will likely solve the problem.

Please let me know if this solves your problem, if not contact me and I’d be happy to take a closer look for you.

      • Thanks, Mike–it was a tag I forgot to close! I didn’t realize that an open tag at the page level would affect the sidebar. It looks great now.

  10. Hi there – very nice theme! Is there an easy way to swap the order of the columns so the header, widgets, etc. are on the right? Thanks so much!

    • Hi Marissa, thanks very much for the compliment!

It’s not super easy as there’s a bunch of css that’ll need refiguring, but I’ll add a new template in the next update with the sidebar on the right.

  11. Merci !

Will you make it multilanguage ?
And maybe a menu zone on the right to put some personnal images ?

  12. Thierry & Marissa, sorry for the wait, I haven’t had time to work on the theme lately but I’ll get an update out before long with alternate sidebar & multi-language support.

    Thanks for your patience.

  13. Hey! Your theme is great! Very good job. Have you i18n files like .pot?
